New genomic techniques new food systems

A fair, healthy, safe and environmentally friendly food system requires a reliable and transparent labelling scheme for products obtained through New Genomic Techniques (NGT) in Europe.

At the moment, scientific and technological barriers in detecting and identifying NGT products complying to European legislation cause ambiguity. Law enforcement authorities and agri-food operators are concerned over NGT products’ health risks and benefits, and consumers lack of clear and transparent information to make informed food choices.

In line with the European Commission’s Farm-to-Fork Strategy, presented as part of the European Green Deal, DARWIN develops 9 reliable and groundbreaking detection strategies and 4 digital solutions developing labelling approaches in the agri-food system to meet EU policy goals, fostering effectiveness of market control and driving social innovation through better informed consumers’ choices.
