NGTS IN EUROPE: DARWIN POLICY WORKSHOP ON IMPLEMENTING THE NEW EU FRAMEWORK

THE DARWIN PROJECT IS PLEASED TO ANNOUNCE ITS UPCOMING POLICY WORKSHOP ON THE IMPLEMENTATION OF THE NEW EU FRAMEWORK FOR NGTS, ON THURSDAY 22 OCTOBER 2026.

As the EU’s new framework for NGTs moves into implementation, competent authorities, control laboratories and food and feed operators face practical questions of traceability, detection and enforcement that the legislation alone does not resolve. The DARWIN policy workshop, led by IFOAM Organics Europe, brings these communities together to examine what effective and proportionate implementation will require, and where science can help.

Discussion will focus on the information NGT developers should provide, the role and limits of analytical methods for controlling NGT-1 and NGT-2 products, the resources that laboratories and control authorities will need, the implications for organic and non-GMO supply chains, and the opportunities offered by results from DARWIN and complementary initiatives such as DETECTIVE.

The workshop is aimed at national and EU competent authorities, GMO control and food and feed laboratories, organic and non-GMO certification bodies, and stakeholders including the European Commission, EFSA, the EURL, breeders, food-chain operators and civil society.

The event will also encourage dialogue between European institutions, Member State authorities, Horizon Europe projects and representatives of the food, feed and agricultural sectors, to exchange experiences and identify practical solutions for the implementation of the new regulatory framework.
